Golden Retrievers were originally bred as sporting dogs. Participation in field events is a great way for Golden owners to develop and demonstrate their Goldens’ retrieving instincts and to help maintain those instincts in the breed. In addition, working with your dog in the field builds an important trust factor between you and your Golden, where you can feel comfortable that your dog will remain under control, off leash, in stimulating circumstances. The official American Kennel Club “Standard for Golden Retrievers” describes the Golden Retriever as “primarily a hunting dog.”
